The Louvre's first acquisition through its modern Become a Patron! programme

The 2012 purchase of Lucas Cranach's three-panel The Three Graces represented a sea change in museum patronage. Nearly 10,000 individual donations, starting at just 60 euros each, paid a third of the painting's 5.2 million euro price.
The pattern has shifted in the UK, Tatler reports. The British Museum, V&A, Tate, Serpentine and National Gallery have created young patrons' schemes that offer unique experiences - private tours, special events, socials and trips abroad - in return.
The payoff
British Museum director Hartwig Fischer says this creates donor understanding that long-term patronage can achieve more than one-time donations. This also means museums can trust donors with decisions about how funds are used.

Current museum fundraising hasn't reached the scale of U.S. institutions receiving hundred-million-dollar donations, or British museums' next phase of development. The Muséé National d'Histoire Naturelle reports crowdfunding and individual contributions make up 15 percent of annual income.
This gap in donor funding may decrease. Museum staff facing budget cuts are pushing for stronger donor relationships. The Handlemann family and other major tech donors could provide more grants in coming years, museum reports indicate. As museums embrace philanthropy, younger donors increasingly view museums as aligning with their values.
